I first heard about the Behan Law Group Military Veteran Scholarship when I was browsing through some recommended scholarships on Salle Mae website. This scholarship caught my eye due to my dad being a long time veteran of the US military. When I began writing the essay, my passion for improving mental health for veterans and military families and destigmatizing grew even more. As a Latina, low-income, first-gen. college student, funds for higher education have never been readily available, especially now as a graduate student because scholarships for postgraduates are few to none. Within Google, countless hours went into finding such scholarships, and The Blossom Law Caregiver Scholarship was one of them. Being selected for this scholarship made me feel incredibly grateful and blessed. Coming from a single parent household, money can be a little of a squeeze at times, so this is a substantial amount of money that I otherwise would not be able to gain. This will ultimately help me reach me goal of graduating from my HBCU with my middle grade education degree, because it takes a great load of stress off of me that may have made me falter in my second semester. I was doing homework when I got a notification. It was an email sent from my Telamon Advisor, Amanda Nehrt. The email was a scholarship opportunity, which was a first-generation scholarship. I sent a video essay talking about my mental health challenges during college and how I overcame them. When I heard I won, I was overjoyed! I wanted to yell, but I was at work. So, I yelled in silence. Recently, I earned my Civil Engineering Bachelor Degree from Michigan State University. Now, I plan to pursue my Civil Engineering Master's Degree at MSU. Upon initial receipt of being this years James Kennedy Law scholarship recipient, I was overjoyed. This award means so much to me as I have been personally effected by drunk driving accidents. Being recognized for writing an essay on a topic that hits home has made me find some peace of mind from such a draining experience. However, I was thrilled to write on how drunk driving can be reduced at a societal level because it is preventable! Upon completion of my law degree, I plan on taking the Florida Bar and practice in the area of personal injury. Hopefully I never have to deal with a drunk driving accident while practicing, but if I come across a case that does, I will be sure to reminisce on this scholarship and reflect on ways drunk driving can be reduced.
